Your first multi pitch climb – Martinswand lower part – just next to town

Description

The route “Bronchitis” (6 pitches, up to UIAA V+) or “Rucula” (7 pitches, up to UIAA VI-) on the lower part of the legendary Martinswand offer beautiful climbing on solid rock, featuring interesting moves and a slabby character. Thanks to their proximity to the city of Innsbruck, they combine an urban flair with a fantastic panoramic view over the Inn Valley, yet still evoke an alpine feeling. These routes are perfect for climbers who want to make the transition from single-pitch climbing to multi-pitch routes, or as a solid introductory tour to kick off the alpine climbing season. There is plenty of time here to improve your technique and rope management skills — or simply to enjoy the sunny rock! Due to their south-facing and sheltered location, the routes on the Martinswand also make great winter climbing destinations.

The Climb

Depending on the season and weather conditions, we meet in the morning at the Martinswand parking lot. After a brief equipment check, we head to the start of the route, which can be reached in under half an hour. There, we take enough time to go through all the procedures once more and review rope handling, so you can enjoy the climbing in a relaxed way. We are also happy to answer any individual questions about multi-pitch tactics!
You then climb enjoyably on rock with good friction, repeatedly interrupted by interesting slab sections. The climbing is continuous but never particularly difficult or strenuous, and not especially exposed. Nevertheless, the view over the Inn Valley gets better with every pitch.
