Rock climbing is an experience in its own right: out in the open air, real lines instead of colourful holds – and no two routes are alike. The variety of rock types and structures makes every climb unique. At the same time, rock climbing presents new challenges that differ significantly from indoor climbing and need to be learnt deliberately.
In this two-day course, we’ll teach you, step by step, the knowledge and practical skills you need to climb independently and safely on the rock. We combine technique, safety and an understanding of the alpine environment:
- Differences in climbing technique: indoor vs. rock
- Correctly clipping quickdraws into bolts
- Reading and understanding topos and route descriptions
- Assessing and trusting bolts and belay points
- Setting up a top rope station
- Safely dismantling a route on the rock
- Retreat options and correct behaviour in an emergency
- Key considerations when belaying on rock
- Assessing rock quality and potential hazards
- Equipment knowledge – and why a helmet is an essential piece of kit
Our aim is to give you confidence – not just technically, but mentally too. This will allow you to fully enjoy the freedom and intensity of rock climbing and move around outdoors with confidence.
Must-haves for the crag
True to the motto, “You don’t go for a coffee after climbing; having a coffee is an integral part of climbing” (Wolfgang Güllich), we’ll be bringing a coffee pot with us to the crag to make our breaks a bit more enjoyable.
