Due to the length of the tour, an overnight stay at the Geraer Hut is recommended to enjoy the Fußstein North Ridge without stress.
The meeting point on the first day is at the “Touristenrast” inn in the Valsertal. After a brief introduction and equipment check, the ascent to the Geraer Hut follows along the beautifully situated new hut trail. Initially flat along the valley floor, the trail soon climbs steeply over old moraine terrain toward the hut. Along the way, you already get impressive views of the north faces of the Schrammacher, Sagwand, and Hohe Kirche, where climbing history has been made.
At the Geraer Hut, we can spend the evening together relaxing and preparing perfectly for the tour the next day.
After an early breakfast, we set off still by headlamp light along an initially marked path and later over old glacier moraines toward the start of the route. At sunrise, the North Ridge—our goal for the day—is already clearly in view!
At the transition to the glacier, it’s time to put on your crampons, and then it’s a steep climb up to the start of the route. The climb begins with steep climbing on cracks, flakes, and edges before the terrain eases off somewhat higher up, offering engaging climbing on slabby rock. This means the Fußstein North Ridge covers the full spectrum of granite climbing!
At the summit, we can enjoy an extended rest while taking in the view and marveling at the ice giants of the Zillertal Alps. On the descent, we need to stay focused one more time along the normal route before we can celebrate a successful tour back at the Geraer Hut!
